“Why are you screaming?”

Chris Matthews totally shreds belligerent simpleton and shrieking right-wingnut Kevin James on Hardball the other night.

Brilliant.

The Bush administration has no problem with torture, so what they should do is strap loyal toady Kevin James into a chopper, hook him up to an amp, and fly him over Afghanistan as an aural warfare device to torment the populace into finally giving up bin Laden. I bet it’d take less than a day before his voice began to drill smoking holes into their brains, even if they didnt listen to a word he said.

I can’t believe this guy actually does a radio show. I thought there were laws against noise pollution in this country.

“What did Neville Chamberlain Do?”

Turn down your volume. Seriously.

Say it loud!

Benazir Bhutto, 1953 - 2007

Benazir Bhutto

Benazir Bhutto was assassinated yesterday as she was leaving a political rally. She stood up to wave at the crowd through the sunroof of her bulletproof transport and was prompted shot three times. The gunman, a suicide bomber, self-detonated right next to her vehicle immediately following the shooting. Prime Minister Bhutto was soon afterwards pronounced dead at a local hospital, and today was buried in her ancestral home, next to her father.

I expected this to happen since the moment she set foot back in Pakistan. It was like I was holding my breath the whole time, just waiting for that other shoe to drop. I have many, many things to say about this, but to be honest, this is the quote that really hit home with me. It’s from this article and was brought to my attention by someone on a forum I moderate:

At a human level this is a tragedy like no other. Only a few days ago I was mentioning to someone that the single most tragic person in all of Pakistan - maybe all the world - is Nusrat Bhutto. Benazir’s mother. Think about it. Her husband, killed. One son alledgedly poisoned. Another son assasinated. Daughter rises to be Prime Minister twice, but jailed, exiled, and finally gunned down.

Today, in shock, I can think only of Benazir Bhutto the human being. Tomorrow, maybe, I will think of politics.

Al Qaeda has purportedly claimed responsibility for the assassination.

What a horrible, horrible waste of hope and potential and future.

A dictator in the making

When Hugo Chavez was elected president of Venezuela, I was happy. I like the idea of socialism - at least a certain kind of socialism which roughly equates to democratic socialism. Though I’m of the firm belief that no one “ism” is ever good enough to run a country on, and that good government relies on the proper mix of pretty much every “ism” (something that we have yet to see in human history), I think socialism is a good place from which to start because it takes the needs of ALL people into account and gives everyone equal status and importance, no matter who you are or where you come from. At least, that’s on paper. We all know that it’s not the “ism” that is ever the problem. It’s the people behind the implementation of any given “ism” that are always causing the huge issues.

Well, it looks like old Hugo is no different. I am very disappointed in this. Since his election I watched him go from a well-meaning man, at least on the surface, to someone who has rapidly propelled himself into the position of dictator of Venezuela. Because that’s what “no term limits” means: dictatorship. Even the most benevolent, kindest of dictators is still a dictator, and a dictatorship is antithetical to democracy. So he’s gone from being someone I admired to someone that I now wish to see put down as fast as possible

Maybe not as fast as Dubya and Cheney, or good old Vlad Putin, or Kim Jong-Il - you get what I’m saying here - but fast. Like so many socialists before him, he has besmirched and smeared what socialism stands for, what socialism is, and as a result he should pay. He won’t - at least not right away - but he should. I’m very, very disappointed in him

And I hope this doesnt give Bernie Sanders, whom I adore, any wild ideas. :P
Shame on you, Hugo. You could have been a great man. Now, you’re just as much a devil as you accused Bush of being. Pot, meet kettle. I dont care if you want to send everyone to college. You also want to be a dictator.

Keep your fucking oil, you double-crossing traitor. I’ll walk.

I’ve always wanted a horse, anyway.

Insult or honour?

I adore the Dalai Lama with as much passion as I despise George W. Bush.

I’m not sure if the Congressional Gold Medal is even worth anything at all when this president is the one awarding it; furthermore, the Dalai Lama is so far and above the token that it’s like he has to stoop to accept it.

But being the gracious man that he is - he’s certainly a better human being than I could ever hope to be even in my wildest fantasies - the Dalai Lama will accept it with that incredible smile that lights up the world and that giggle that sounds like the stars themselves are laughing, so it’ll be okay, because he’s really not above or below anything, really; that’s the whole point, I suppose.

Still, though, it rankles me that this president, of all presidents, is the one to do the honours. I should let the Dalai Lama be my inspiration and rise above that kind of feeling - he of all people understands what having to deal with a corrupt and abusive government is all about, especially when you put it into perspective - but being the base, grubby dirtbag that I am, it’s just too close and the emotions are too raw for me to do it.

I’d say congratulations, but I just wouldn’t mean it. The “honour” is worthless to me, and the gesture is mystifying. My first thought was “hmm, I wonder what Shrub is up to now behind the cover of this gesture?” I just dont believe he’d do anything at all without a despicable ulterior motive. I wish the Dalai Lama would refuse it, to be honest. I really do. But he won’t, because he’s just not that kind of guy. That’s why he’s the Dalai Lama and I’m just some fat schmuck in LA.

Oh, and fuck China.

Well done, Mr. President!!!

No, no, I mean President Gore…you know, the guy we actually elected a few years back? Yeah, him.

“Even the police began to sit up and take notice.”

Wow. You mean after all these years someone in authority has finally done something about the fact that that our U.S.-backed guerilla vigilante operatives were running around Iraq shooting civilians and being as unlawful as it is possible to be, all while on the payroll of the United States government? Imagine that!

These guys have been over there operating under absolutely zero restraint, under zero control, and zero law since the second they landed, have been far better equipped, paid, and cared for than our actual soldiers - to the point where many soldiers refuse to re-up in the military, opting instead to eagerly to sign up with Blackwater and the other for-hire operative groups that are in Iraq and Afghanistan because of the very high pay and the great perks. Theyve been running amok, blowing shit up and murdering civilians in cold blood since day one and it’s only just now finally gotten the attention of our media? Britney Spears must be having a slow day today.

I dont expect that attention to last long, but at least something is better than nothing; their contract is now terminated. It’s about fucking time. I won’t even pretend to be naive enough to believe that anyone will be held accountable in any way, but at least the contract has been terminated.

I’m glad the Iraqi government actually had a nut and is banning them, but I wonder how long it’ll be before we find out that some kind of shady deal has been reached to allow them to continue operating over there. We have nowhere near enough troops to deal with this mess we’ve got in the Mideast; that’s why these goons were brought in in the first place. No way in hell theyre not going to be allowed to continue to operate.

This government, en masse, should be put on trial for crimes against humanity.
