I only realized that this editorial by Garrison Keillor terrified me after I finished reading it.

I was still laughing. Not for long, though. I went cold with fear. Slowly, so I felt it creep along and overtake me. It took a minute. The awful realization dawned on me. The whole scenario unfolded in my head, crystal-clear and unrelenting, and I saw it. I saw the whole thing happening. I saw it happening, unhindered, heedless of any outcry.
