Okay so an excellent friend of mine who is stubbornly unlinkable unwittingly directed me to my most recent obsession: the new Weird Al Yankovic record, Straight Outta Lynwood.
More specifically, he showed me the video for the single off the record, “White & Nerdy.”
Pretty much every line of this song either describes me or every one of my closest friends in loving detail. Together, we make up the entire demographic of the “White & Nerdy” part of this song. I have to say that thankfully I do not know any “gangstas,” nor would I wish to.
I must own that hoodie.
And, in fact, Al is indeed in my Top Eight Spaces. Though in the interests of veracity I must note here that nobody is “begging” for that particular honour. Foolish mortals.
Right. So watch the video and then toddle over and buy yourself a copy of Al’s new CD. It’s got videos on it and it’s actually his very first top 10 record and single.
Plus, today is his forty-seventh birthday.
Thanks to Lilmoo for the heads up, and to Griddlecakes for showing it to him first.
Rawk!
By the way…I actually made that very face when I got my bootleg copy of the abysmally bad “Star Wars Holiday Special.”
Also, so far for me the best song on the Lynwood record after “White & Nerdy” is “I’ll Sue Ya.” I not only love the music – that’s the best song on the album to me, from a purely musical standpoint – but the lyrics are just fuckin’ great. Check it.
In other Weird Al news, there’s also a video to one of his songs off Poodle Hat called “Hardware Store.” Slegg (60 rogue) and Maere (60 mage), clever bastards that they are, from the European (English) World of Warcraft server Stormrage, put it together with the help of their guild, Phoenix, back in August. Someone showed it to me last week and I haven’t been able to stop watching it. It’s just really, really well done and it tickles the shit outta me. The song is pretty terrific, too. Their email addresses appear in the credits at the end of the video in case you want to email them to tell them how leet their skillz are.
This stuff also reminded me that I haven’t listened to Weird Al in way, way too long. So I favourited a crapload of his videos on YouTube and bought UHF on DVD. :)
Next paycheck, Straight Outta Lynwood will be minnnneeeeee!!!
And finally, as currently noted on Al’s homepage, a final link. This one is to his parody of “Youre Beautiful” by James Blunt. Blunt gave Al permission to parody the song, but for some stupid reason, his label, Atlantic Records, decided to tell Al he couldnt do it.. Here’s the link to the story, and here’s the song.
From the article:
“I have a long-standing history of respecting artists’ wishes,” Yankovic writes. “So if James Blunt himself were objecting, I wouldn’t even offer my parody for free on my Web site. But since it’s a bunch of suits — who are actually going against their own artist’s wishes — I have absolutely no problem with it.”
Screw you, Atlantic. Screw you right in the ear.
Enjoy. =)
