This is the best thing that has come out of Katrina by far. It took a shamefully long in coming, but at least it’s here at last.

Now that the most deserving amongst us are provided for, if we could only figure out a way to get the government to care about people…

That being said, here’s an amusing example of how we are doomed to failure even before we begin:

“Republican Rep. Christopher Shays of Connecticut, with Lantos a co-chairman of the Congressional Friends of Animals Caucus, said estimates are that some 600,000 animals died or were left without shelter as a result of Hurricane Katrina.”

Got that? Six hundred thousand animals. Now let’s scroll down a bit further to the end of the article:

Louisiana’s Legislature is considering a separate measure requiring that the state come up with plans to transport and house pets in an evacuation.

The sponsor, Sen. Heulette “Clo” Fontenot, said the bill was written on the assumption the state would need 10,000 cages for the animals.

Here’s an article from 2002 that’s on the BBC News website today, in conjunction with this article about a newly published report from the British Ministry Of Defense, declaring that there is no proof of alien life.

At the time of his UFO article, David Whitehouse was the BBC News Online Science Editor. He still may be; no idea, really; the last article I could find with his byline in the BBC archives was dated around 2004. If he is, though, he shouldnt be, with the shoddy methodology he has. What a condescending, ignorant little man. I read a number of his stories and they all had the same tone. I wouldn’t trust him with a fact if it had handles.
