What do you know.
As you’ve probably heard by now, three massive explosions in Amman, Jordan, have killed 56+ people and the Al Qaeda Iraq group has taken responsibility for it. I am firmly of the belief that people who bomb locations where things like wedding parties are taking place do it specifically for that reason. I feel terrible for Jordan today.
There are mass demonstrations in the streets of Jordan. Turns out that the folks there are actually furious at the terrorists, though. For once, they got it right. I see too few Islamic people…in any country, including the United States…speaking out in mass rage against the fundamentalists of their own religion. It’s good to see that the people of Jordan are intelligent enough to understand who the real enemy is, and angry enough to take their outrage to the streets. This indiscriminate blowing up of innocent people has got to stop. It doesnt matter who’s doing it. Everyone should be against it.
For a country steeped in Islamic faith and Middle Eastern culture, Jordan can almost be considered free thinking. The royal family certainly has made some considerable efforts towards a more liberal and equal society, and the old king wanted to push even further but understood that you can only change people’s thinking so fast before they rebel against you. So far, his son seems fain to follow in his father’s footsteps. There were pictures of the Jordanian queen in the hospital today, drying the tears of the victims.
The people of Jordan have the capacity and the desire to embrace a forward thinking culture, and I’m glad to see it. Maybe theyve got a long way to go, but at least theyre making a serious attempt at evolution. However slowly they get there doesnt really matter, as long as in the end, they arrive. Maybe if freedom, democracy, and equality works there and improves the country, their neighbors will take note and follow the trend. Wouldn’t that be nice?
My hopes and thoughts are with the Jordanian people.
